Design students from Bournemouth and Poole College have been congratulated by Wessex Water for coming up with innovative water saving ideas.

The students, who are undertaking a Higher National Diploma course in graphic design, which started only a year ago at the college, took part in a Royal Society of Art competition which invited budding designers to come up with a public awareness campaign focussed on ‘Water, water everywhere’.

They were invited to visit our sewage treatment works, in Holdenhurst, to help inspire their designs as well as to find out how we use water throughout treatment processes.

One of our education advisers, Duncan Forbes, “The students were amazed by the amount of water people use as well as the amount of wrong items, such as cotton buds, sanitary products and so called “flushable” wipes that go down the toilets in Bournemouth.

“It was really encouraging to see the students having such a great interest in water and wanting to find out about what we are doing to add resilience to supplies to cope with climate change and an increasing population.”

The final designs from the students, which really impressed our water efficiency team, focused on reducing the pressure on drains to prevent flooding in Bournemouth.

Jane Jenkins, design course leader at the college, said: “Visiting the sewage treatment works really helped the students to get a great insight into what the RSA were looking for from their designs.

“All of the students came away full of knowledge and great ideas and were really impressed with the way that water is used efficiently within Wessex Water.”

Some of the designs incorporated important water saving tips such as turning off the tap when brushing teeth, which can save up to 18 litres of water, as well as collecting water while the tap runs from cold to hot and using it to water plants.

Duncan, visited the college on Friday (6 June) to present the students with their final designs and to thank them for their ideas.

Our three education advisers provide an education service to pupils across our region, which spans Dorset, Wiltshire, Bath, Somerset, Bristol and parts of South Gloucestershire and Hampshire.
